Morocco’s payment landscape reflects a technologically advanced and digitally developing economy, with a growing embrace of digital solutions. Debit cards are widely used for both online and in-store transactions. Credit cards are also widely accepted. While cash remains popular for smaller purchases and in-store purchases, its usage is declining. Contactless payments are becoming increasingly common, and mobile wallets like Samsung Pay and Apple Pay are gaining traction, particularly among younger generations. This trend towards digital payments is driven by a desire for convenience, security, and greater flexibility. Mozambique’s payment system is predominantly cash-based, reflecting limited access to formal financial services and underdeveloped digital infrastructure. Credit and debit card usage is growing, especially in urban centers and larger businesses, but its adoption remains limited compared to cash. Mobile money services are emerging as a key driver of financial inclusion, but their expansion faces significant challenges related to infrastructure, internet connectivity, and digital literacy.
