Mobile money platforms, particularly MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money, are the most prevalent payment methods, used for a wide range of transactions. Cash remains important for smaller transactions and in-store purchases, but its use is declining as mobile money becomes more widespread. The country is also embracing contactless payments and the use of mobile wallets. Uganda’s payment system is characterized by a significant role for mobile money, reflecting relatively low banking penetration and expanding access to digital financial services.
