3D-secure
With the 3D-Secure procedure, the cardholder must register with his card-issuing bank. This serves as additional protection against credit card misuse and for clear identification of the legitimate cardholder. The 3D Secure procedure is implemented in different ways. Mastercard SecureCode, for example, provides verification of the cardholder by means of an additional security code that must be entered directly at the customer’s issuer bank via an external site. At Visa, the procedure works very similarly via the Verified by Visa principle, in which a password and a personal security message are set at the issuer during registration.
The 3D Secure procedure is thus intended to provide greater security and trust for Internet customers and store operators alike. On the other hand, an additional step and redirection is required during the ordering process in the online store, which can also be viewed critically from the point of view of user-friendliness and conversion and may have a negative impact on overall sales. In practice, this must be monitored and assessed by each e-commerce operator himself.
