Camt Messages
“Camt” stands for “cash management message”. It refers to an XML-based format used for message exchange between banks and customers. Until now, the SWIFT MT 940 and MT 942 bank statement formats serve as the basis for transmitting bank statement information to customers. However, these formats are not sufficient to represent XML-based information of SEPA payment orders. Hence, the use of Camt messages based on the ISO 20022 standard was added in the DFÜ agreement. It is true that the EU Regulation No. 260/2012 does not make it mandatory to use the Camt message format for electronic account statements for SEPA payments. However, since SEPA and Camt messages use the same references, field definitions and data structures; it can be assumed that this format will become the valid standard in communication between banks and customers. Camt messages are used in the SEPA environment for intraday account statements, end-of-day statements, incoming direct debit notifications and credit transfers.
Types of Camt messages
Three are three different types of Camt messages. The Camt message 052 is equivalent to the previous SWIFT message MT 941/942, which contains intraday transactions as well as the balance report. This includes credits and debits of the related accounts. In addition, Camt-052 messages provide information on the respective transactions on the accounts. The Camt 053 message is equivalent to the previous MT 940 and 950 formats and provides information on the posted turnovers on the corresponding accounts. Furthermore, Camt-053 messages also provide balance notifications on the accounts as well as details on the relevant postings. Camt-054 messages are considered the equivalent of the previous MT 900 and 910 message formats, also known as DTI files. This message is used to provide information about upcoming turnovers.
