Webmaster
A webmaster takes care of the planning, design, development, marketing and maintenance of a website, several pages or even applications on the World Wide Web. The term was invented and coined by Tim Berner-Lee, the inventor of the Internet. Originally, the term webmaster was used to refer to the administrator of a website, while the term has now evolved into a more general term referring to the operation of a website. The webmaster takes the position of a project manager for various projects on the Internet.
Competencies of a webmaster
Webmasters must have general skills in programming, web design, server administration and Internet business. They must be able to work with programming languages and markup languages such as HTML. A special and state-approved training for webmasters does not yet exist in Germany. However, the basics of web development are now part of most computer science training and degree courses. The job title webmaster is used less frequently today, as there is a strong trend towards specialization due to increasingly complex tasks. Websites are very often run by a team of experts, including programmers, graphic designers, system and network administrators, and specialists in online marketing and e-commerce.
The webmaster in the field of adult sites
After the term webmaster has lost its meaning in the general web and programming business, it takes on a more specific meaning in the adult site industry. Here, people are called webmasters who build a website in order to place advertisements on it and thus refer as many users as possible to erotic or gambling providers. The providers then pay a certain amount per referred user to the webmaster. The webmaster’s field of activity in this area is limited to creating a rather simple website without much added value for the user. Rather, he acts as a mere intermediary.
