A pingback is the notification of a document or web page link on the Internet. Using XML-RPC (Extensible Markup Language Remote Procedure Call), authors can track on the web which people, pages or blogs link to or cite their own website. However, certain requirements are necessary for this. For example, the person citing or using the link must have the technical capabilities of pingback tracking.
Notification of a link
A pingback is a fully automated process. For example, if an author writes an article or a blog and someone else reads it and links to it, the author receives notification of this in the form of a pingback. At the same time, the pingback, i.e. the reference to one’s own page, can be listed on one’s own page via the software.
Pingbacks and blogs
Pingbacks are popular notification services, especially among bloggers. A blog, also called a weblog, stands for a diary or journal publicly listed on the web. As a rule, blogs are posts published in chronological order. The most recent post is always at the top. An essential characteristic of a blog is the clear expression of opinion by the author. In most cases, comment functions and discussions are also allowed below the blog post. Since many also operate their blog commercially and finance it through advertising revenue, it is important for bloggers to have as many readers and visitors as possible. Blogs are often connected to each other by links. The pingback notification system allows users to be notified about the use of their links. The majority of bloggers are in favour of such links, as they can increase the interest in their own blog through the referring URLs.
